The crew traces the signal to find the Klingon cruiser Mauler, trapped in an extremely violent dimensional storm, but the Klingons refuse all offers of help. Determined to learn what the Klingons are doing in Federation territory, Kirk beams over to the Mauler with a security team, but they become trapped with the Klingons when the storm flares to its highest intensity. The remaining crew of the Enterprise watches as the Mauler vanishes from their screens, and Kirk finds himself stranded further away than he had feared — one hundred years in the future.
